Growing up, I tortured my sister forcing her to play school. We had a chalkboard in the basement and I was always, always the teacher. Fast forward to present day and I’m still holding the chalk… Thankfully most of the time my students are very willing participants and not conscripted siblings!
My 2024 teaching calendar is filling up, friends, and I’d love to see you “in class.” Here’s a roundup of where you can find me in the first quarter of 2024:
Copyediting I at UCLA Extension
In January, I’ll be teaching Copyediting I at UCLA Extension. Copyediting I is an asynchronous class (that means no set meeting times, you can watch and learn at your own pace as long as you keep up with weekly deadlines) that is perfect for authors who want to level up the technical proficiency of their writing. Not sure what a dangling modifier is? How to spot broken parallel structure? User-friendly textbooks, lectures, and exercises help take your self-editing to the next level.
If you’re an editor or aspiring editor, Copyediting I is designed to help you better understand the most common errors that take place in client work. While you may be very familiar with The Chicago Manual of Style, applying the concepts to an actual client’s voice can be challenging. We work on developing a portfolio and editor brand as well, so if you’re looking to level-up your freelance practice, land a copyediting position, or simply looking to brush up your skills with close mentorship and guidance, Copyediting I is by far the most in-demand class I teach.
(As of this writing, the class *may* be full, but you can get on the waitlist or sign up now for the spring class!)
Freelance Editing at UCLA Extension
This course is a critical part of the Editing & Publishing Certificate at UCLA Extension! Also offer via asynchronous instruction, the Freelance Editing course is one I designed to teach aspiring and experienced freelance editors how to offer services at different prices points and varying levels of complexity. It can be tough for new editors to know what they don’t know, and it can be even more difficult to build a small business from scratch, often while balancing other work/a job/family/life. Join me this January for Freelance Editing and learn how to make money doing what you love—reading and working with authors! Part craft instruction, part business management, and part mentorship, this is one of my most popular courses!
If you’re looking for online instruction you can take at your own pace from the comfort of your own home/car/lunch break at the day job, check out the extensive offerings at UCLA Extension. Whether you’re looking for writing or editing classes, an internship or other one-one guidance, I adore the community of working professionals who teach. And I’m always amazed at the talented, accomplished students in the classes!
These are just the classes I’m teaching in January 2024. Stay tuned for the BIG news about a course going live in February!
Private Instruction
If your budget, schedule, or needs won’t allow you to enroll in one of the formal classes I teach, why not connect with me one on one via Zoom? I charge hourly and can provide individual instruction on whatever topics you need! Novel structure? Self-editing? Publishing or self-publishing? Submission prep? I pack our session (or sessions!) with information and resources so you can make the most of our time and your budget. I’d love to help you reach your professional development goals this year!
